*Counseling Center Tip of the day: Ask About Your Teen’s Friends
Telling your parents about yourself can be scary. It’s a lot less stressful to tell them about someone else. Parents can help teens engage by allowing them to not engage. Ask about their friends instead. It sounds backward, but as teens open up and tell you what is happening with their friends, they’re also giving you insight into what is on their mind or what they’re noticing. Or if you can’t ask them about a specific problem, ask your teen about their mood. Again, they’ll get around to what is on their mind; they just need help getting started.
