*Join us for our monthly PTSO meeting Thursday, Oct. 1st, 7:00 pm by zoom (Zoom link). We will have information about the new format for student council and will be discussing how to recognize students this year in new and innovative ways.  Mark your calendars for our November 5th meeting at 7 when we will have speakers discussing how to assist students with coping with disappointment and COVID stressors!

*Join Mrs. Fickes every day in October to hear a spooky tale/story. Each day, Mrs. Fickes will post a new video of either a chapter of a scary story or a short story on the Mickle library webpage. These will be available under the favorites tab on the webpage. Students will need to use their LPS login to see the video.

*Bryan Health is providing an exclusive event for teachers to share with their students in the classroom next Wed, Oct 7th, as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week activities. In addition to its connection to well-being, this presentation is also part of our effort to provide education to students about digital citizenship.

“Life is Meant to be Lived Offline” (from Save the Kids Foundation) will be presented as a virtual, pre-recorded assembly (shown in their classroom) lasting 30-35 minutes. It will feature Collin Kartchner, a national speaker whose presentation will focus on youth and social media and the importance of connecting with real people in real life. His message is that likes, followers, Snap streaks and retweets do not determine a person’s worth. And, you can’t compare your life with the highlight reels you see on your phone. Collin provides an encouraging message to help tweens, teens – and all of us – rise above social media comparison, negativity and the stress of being perfect.

Please note: the presentation focuses on some of the negative impacts of social media on mental well-being and though it is not about suicide, suicide will be mentioned. Teachers will review the ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) model before the video and remind students the importance of seeking a trusted adult when they are concerned about themselves or others.

If you prefer your student NOT watch this video please contact your student’s grade level counselor.

On the first Monday of October, students and adults alike are encouraged to #BlueUp by wearing a blue shirt to make that the day (October 5th, 2020) that bullying prevention is heard around the world.

*Today’s Counselor Corner:

The teenage years are a formative period. Sleep is essential during this time, working behind the scenes to allow teens to be at their best. Unfortunately, research indicates that many teens get far less sleep than they need. Teens need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep per night. Getting this recommended amount of sleep can help teens maintain their physical health, emotional well-being, and school performance.

Teens can review and improve their sleep hygiene, which includes their sleep environment and habits. Some healthy sleep tips that can help in this process include:

-Budgeting eight hours of sleep into your daily schedule and keeping that same schedule on both weekdays and weekends.

-Creating a consistent pre-bed routine to help with relaxation and falling asleep fast.

-Avoiding caffeine and energy drinks, especially in the afternoon and evening.

-Putting away electronic devices for at least a half-hour before bed and keeping them on silent mode to avoid checking them during the night.

-Setting up your bed with a supportive mattress and pillows.

-Keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

Picture retakes will be Thursday, October 1 from 1-3pm.  A sign up sheet is available in the Mickle Office.

This is for students who did not have their picture taken on August 21, were not at school on August 21, or there was a technical issue & have requested a retake of the student’s picture.  If the retake is due to a problem with the original picture, LifeTouch requires the student to return their original picture package proof.  Students will turn those in at the time of the retake.

Remote learning students are also invited on October 1, between 1-3pm to get their picture taken for the yearbook.  Families will need to provide transportation to/from Mickle and face coverings will be required during the whole process leading up to/after picture time.  There may be a small wait for the picture to be taken as retake students will follow the same process.  Parents are asked to wait in their car until their remote learner is finished.  Online pre-orders for pictures from Oct 1 are going to be available.  Once LifeTouch provides the order code, we will share it to remote learner families.

*Thank you so much to everyone who purchased cookie dough or frosting. We raised over $800 that will be used to support the staff and students of Mickle Middle School. We will be sponsoring dine-outs and a variety of other fundraisers as we go through the 2020/2021 school year.

We know that some of them may not be things your family likes or are available to support, but the variety of opportunities gives more people the chance to help us make Mickle better.

We would love to have the involvement of more parents, staff, teachers and students in PTSO. For more information on how you can get involved please visit the PTSO page on the Mickle Website https://mickle.lps.org/ptso/. We are also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

*The health office will be beginning annual 7th grade health screening (height/weight, vision and hearing) to comply with State of Nebraska regulations. Any questions please contact our health office at 402-436-1216 (option 4)
